The SNES's various areas were definitely a lot more interesting.

The PSP remake is essentially SO1 redone with SO2's engine. I agree with you that the world map is a weird addition, though I understand why they did it.

One of the new characters ties up a mini plot that wasn't properly resolved in the SNES version. I've beaten both the SNES and PSP versions of the first Star Ocean. Besides, I can't seem to get the SNES version running smoothly on my PSP Go. I've decided to continue with First Departure to try out something new. So what I'm really getting at is after my rant, is the PSP version worth continuing or should I go emulate the SNES version? Does the PSP version have any substantial new content that's worth playing for? I'm all for continuing the PSP version if it's the definitive version with new content and the like but it's just so visually bland compared to the original.ĮDIT: Thanks for the feedback, ladies and gents. Definitely glad they kept the original music score in this. The anime scenes were a nice touch and the voice acting a hit or miss. I don't really remember how the battle system was like in the original but the PSP version seemed kind of clunky too. It was filled with vibrancy and the like. I remember the SNES didn't really have world map traveling and instead opted for traveling through different areas to get to your destinations/towns. I'll admit that I'm all the way in the beginning of the game, just got to Coulte and Millie's father was about to turn to stone so I haven't experienced the other areas yet. Lo and behold, the game was kind of ugly looking and felt really clunky. So here I am, ready to experience the beauty that was the original SNES game and started up The First Departure. Unfortunately, I never did finish the whole game. I remembered playing the fan translated version on the SNES and was completely blown away by how amazingly beautiful it was with its visuals and music. The gameplay is hack ‘n’ slash in nature and has plenty of special abilities to master. So I finally got around to playing The First Departure for the PSP.

This includes full voiceovers, with a choice of Japanese or English VO, new character illustrations, speed mode and an adjusted game balance. Star Ocean will come with some new features as it is a remastered version of the original western PSP version. Together with his two friends Millie and Dorne, Roddick sets off for adventure and a cure for the disease that lets people live in a petrified state. But things take a turn when Roddick learns about a mysterious disease that is now plaguing nearby towns, turning those who are inflicted to stone. The story follows Roddick who lives pretty much in an uneventful town of Kratus on the planet of Roak. It will be available digitally for $20.99.
